“An intriguing, ultimately irresistible evening of live performance and mixed media” – Hartford Examiner
“Sly and theatrically adventuresome!” – Hartford Courant
Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar, the team behind the internationally acclaimed Big Dance Theater, bring their signature style fusing theater and movement to this adaptation of two of Anton Chekov’s 1898 short stories, Man in a Case and About Love. In tales both witty and haunting, a shy, reclusive man’s courtship of a carefree young woman forces him to stare down his own rigid nature while another man relives the story of a lost love. Mikhail Baryshnikov stars, and is joined onstage with a cast that includes Big Dance Theater veterans Jess Barbagallo, Tymberly Canale, Chris Giarmo, and Aaron Mattocks.

Mikhail Baryshnikov scarcely dances until the haunting finale of Berkeley Rep’s “In Paris.” But the ballet legend shows such a genius for movement that his body language is an art unto itself in this fearlessly inventive theatrical adventure. – San Jose Mercury News
“The piece has continued to resonate inside me, not unlike the memory of past loves, long extinguished though never completely forgotten.” – Charles McNulty, L.A. Times
Based on the 1940 short story of the same name by Russian writer Ivan Bunin, In Paris is the tale of two Russian immigrants thrown together by chance in 1930s France. He, a former general in the white Russian army, and she, a beautiful young woman many years his junior. They fall madly in love. But their time together is brief. When one dies, the other discovers what it means to feel hopelessly alone. IN PARIS is directed by Dmitry Krymov, whose work is at the forefront of expressionistic movement theater in Russia, and stars the iconic Mikhail Baryshnikov and Russian screen siren Anna Sinyakina as the two lovers.
